TYPES OF ALOPECIA WE SUPPORT

Alopecia Areata

Alopecia Areata is an autoimmune condition that causes patchy hair loss on the scalp and sometimes other areas of the body. Hair loss can occur suddenly and vary in severity.

🏥 Insurance Note:

  • May be covered if documented as medically necessary

  • A doctor’s diagnosis is often required

  • Coverage varies by provider

Alopecia Totalis

Alopecia Totalis is a more advanced form of alopecia areata that results in the loss of all hair on the scalp.

🏥 Insurance Note:

  • More likely to qualify due to extent of hair loss

  • Often requires:

    • Medical diagnosis

    • Documentation of hair loss

Alopecia Universalis

Alopecia Universalis is the most extensive form of alopecia, resulting in complete hair loss across the entire body, including scalp, eyebrows, and eyelashes.

🏥 Insurance Note:

  • Higher likelihood of coverage

  • Typically qualifies as medical necessity

  • Requires physician documentation

Traction Alopecia

Traction Alopecia is caused by prolonged tension on the hair from tight hairstyles such as braids, weaves, or ponytails.

🏥 Insurance Note:

  • Usually considered cosmetic

  • May NOT be covered by insurance

  • Exceptions may apply in severe or permanent cases

Androgenetic Alopecia (Female Pattern Hair Loss)

This is a common form of hair thinning caused by genetics and hormonal changes, often resulting in gradual thinning at the crown or part line.

🏥 Insurance Note:

  • Typically considered cosmetic

  • Not usually covered

  • Clients can still purchase wigs out-of-pocket

Scarring Alopecia (Cicatricial Alopecia)

Scarring Alopecia involves permanent hair loss due to inflammation that damages hair follicles and replaces them with scar tissue.

🏥 Insurance Note:

  • May qualify if documented as permanent medical hair loss

  • Requires medical evaluation and diagnosis
